Born in Israel to Greek Armenian parents, Benny and his family relocated to Canada in 1967. He received a Catholic parochial school education in Israel. During a Kathryn Kuhlman evangelistic outreach in 1973, Benny experienced a visitation of the Holy Spirit that led to his call to preach. At age 11, while he was still in Israel he felt a visitation of Jesus; dreams, visions and angel appearances; a one-on-one conversation with the Holy Spirit that makes him drew closer to God as well.

In February 1972, when he was “born again,” Benny Hinn began to sense his call. He saw himself in a vision, preaching to an enormous crowd.

Then, in December of 1973, young Benny Hinn went with his dear friend Jim Poynter, a Free Methodist minister, to attend a service led by Kathryn Kulhman. It was the first time he heard Kathryn preach. Her message helped this young man connect in new ways to the Holy Spirit. Her message seemed to speak to him personally, and to strengthen his call. By April 1974 he began to have visions. He saw a large, deep valley, a roaring inferno of fire and thousands of people falling into it. The Lord spoke to him to preach the Gospel. The message of the Holy Spirit was that Benny must preach to help save souls.

Young Benny Hinn began to speak at meetings. In December 1974, Stan and Shirley Phillips invited him to give his testimony at their church in Oshawa, which was the beginning of “this ministry, which is the ministry of the Holy Spirit” as Pastor Benny wrote in his journal. He had suffered from childhood with a stutter. That night, as Pastor Benny got up to speak, God loosened his stammering tongue and healed him from stuttering.

In April 1975, Benny's photo appeared in the Toronto Star for a little Pentecostal church in which he was preaching. His father and mother, Costandi and Clemence, saw his picture and went to the meeting. Later that night he opened the Scripture to his parents and led them to the Lord.
